I know, I know, fan art just isn’t always cool, but I can’t help myself. This is an unfinished ode to Michael Turner that I did whilst watching tv. For a moment, I can pretend that I’m as good an artist as Turner.

My Illustration Crushes of the Moment
Howdie do!
I would like to share with you my crushes….shhh, don’t tell anyone, it’s a secret.
I am quite in love with the works of two formidable yet very different illustrators and thought I would share them with you just in case you haven’t come across their work.
The first is Echo Chernik who’s modern art nouveau illustrations are not only sexy and glamorous but also beautiful and inspiring. I could start to explain why I like her work so much but I fear I shall end up sounding gushy. Do take a look at her website though and you’ll see for yourself why the colourful, vibrant and perfectly poised images get me all excited.
The second is contemporary illustrator, Vicky Newman. Using a combination of hand drawn and digital colour techniques, she creates evocative images both fresh and atmospheric. I particularly love the pieces in her ‘Unexpected Illustration’ series…lots of yummy contrast and colour to feast your eyes on.
Go forth and explore the delectable works of these talented women. They make me green with envy, they do.

More preparation. Not going to say too much, but this is just here to whet your appetite!
Gentle Violence

A brief feather drawing to be used at a later date. I particularly liked this feather because of the way its tranquil shape has been disrupted on one side. It illustrates the relationship between calm and aggression, action and passivity.
Dreamscape
This is one of the preparatory sketches for a painting I have wanted to do for years. It’s a particularly meaningful piece to me which is why it’s taken me nearly 10 years to finally build up the courage to commit the image in my head to paper. Being a perfectionist about my work can be a good thing but likewise it can prove to be an albatross. I know that I will be greatly disappointed in myself if I cannot do this image justice, but I have now realised that it’s better to attempt it then not to try at all.
I am quite sure that I shall be working and reworking this painting for a long time to come and I am looking forward to the challenge.
